Integrated Listening Systems (iLs)
iLs uses full spectrum sound paired with activity, to target various brain functions. The child wears a headset streaming specialized music while they complete a variety of activities. The process strengthens cerebellar functions, which means strengthening the foundation for higher level skill development.
What is iLs?
Integrated Listening Systems (iLs) is a multi-sensory program for improving brain function. The activities are fun and can be customized for all ages and skill levels. iLs uses full spectrum sound paired with activity, to target various brain functions. This is achieved by having the child wear a headset streaming specialized music while they complete a variety of activities, led by their therapist, parent or coach. The technology is based on using full spectrum sound and vibration through bone conduction to target the onerous system and various functions. The stimulation provided by the iLs when paired with activity challenges the brain to process multiple sensory inputs at once. Neurons that fire together wire together and brain organization means these inputs are processed through the cerebellum. Strengthening cerebellar functions means strengthening the foundation for higher level skill development.
How We Use iLs
Any iLs program may be paired with and incorporated into occupational therapy sessions and/or function as a stand-alone home program, coached by one of our iLs certified therapists. iLs has been found to accelerate progress in OT and to be an effective means of providing increased intensity of service, when coming into the clinic daily is not logistically or financially feasible. While it does not substitute for occupational therapy because it is a different type of intervention, it may be a viable option for those unable to participate in or attend clinic-based services. Most iLs programs take at least 3 months to complete and some take up to a year, depending on what functions we want to target with the program. iLs is not suitable for everyone but it has helped children with:
- motor impairment
- self-regulation difficulties
- poor attention & concentration
- language processing difficulties
- poor sleep
- difficulty with social interactions
- recovery from brain injury

The iLs methodology integrates music, movement and language exercises for the purpose of improving brain function. iLs programs are designed to be fun, and may be used on their own or in conjunction with other methods.
We train for brain/body integration through a staged approach, starting with the fundamentals of sensory integration and then extending through more complex cognitive functions, including language, self-expression and social skills.
“What we are doing, by targeting subcortical functions, is improving brain organization from the bottom up.”
Ron Minson, MD, iLs Clinical Director
